Attic
02:51
|
|||
Basement full of birds; attic full of bats
Bicycle down the boulevard; your car has got a flat
Mourning doves can't coo in the jaws of your house cat
The sun prisms through the peephole, happy endings are so flat
I am the tired that doesn't go away.
I am the tired not asleep when it's sleeping.
I am the tired laughing while it's weeping
Recall that word. (I dreamt that line)
Repeating half-sleeping; Nonsense in my mind
Out loud at 3 a.m.; mooney looney darkroom blind
People from the waist up, feeling so unkind

Feathers
03:55
|
|||
When I think about you- you're wearing a green dress
and a yellow rose is pinned slightly above your breast
And your voice is a prescription, written on a leaf
how can an apparition be a heart's thief?
Black and white wire-- the red one channels desire
green is the ground-- buried in the ground
blues tick tock-- through the sheet rock
you are all poise; all I bring is noise
I’m seeking solace and she softly says,
I’m seeking solace and she softly says,
she runs her fingers through my graying hair
I’m seeking solace and she softly says,
she leans close, whispers in my ear…
I don't care what anybody might say
I’m the feathers on the wings of the prayers you pray
you hear promises from when you’re born ‘til you’re dead
I'll be the feathers in the pillow where you lay your head
the feathers in the pillow where you lay your head

Rainy, Quietly
04:07
|
|||
Fall rain falls
Flora hanging around
Half up half down
Fall rain falls
Flora hanging around
Half up half down
In a nearby cabin
there's a lady
Says her name is Rainy
She's married
to a round country cop.
he loves to talk, talk, talk, talk
Friendly enough
to me, which you
agree, means nothing
Everyone is armed here,
casually. I'm not,
I'm here to breathe.
Rainy smiles
Though everyday
She's rainy, quietly
Fall rain falls
Flora hanging around
Half up half down

Western Hat
04:29
|
|||
You burned your fire
Til it was out of light
Jumped into the car
With a dog in the night
I removed the headrest
And wore my Western hat
Slammed open the glovebox
Looking for a light and a map
Are those clouds or mountains
In the distance and gloaming
The dog got nervous--
Sneezing and foaming
We drive towards abundance
But stay hungry
Why are we on these streets?
All these houses are empty
A murmuration at dawn and
A bat or two swooping, diving
Starlings keep swarming
As the sun starts its rising
I removed the headrest
And wore my Western hat
Slammed open the glovebox
Looking for a light and a map

Russian Poison Plot
05:44
|
|||
Just a regular guy praying for sunshine
I thought your attic window was the moon
a russian poison plot on the table
drinks and dinner ended far too soon
Fighting a flood with a fire hose
the water comes and the water goes
fighting a flood with a fire hose
the water comes and the water goes
A regular guy regularly following all the rules
I thought the flood was the sky, the reflection the moon
Your automobile floating fast past our house
You reached for the rudder the brakes in ruin

Pulpy Sweet
03:02
|
|||
Eating a plum that is your heart
Pulpy red sweet and oh so tart
These are the trees we hope don't fall
Beside the little cabin with the garden wall
Outdoor voices from an upstairs window
a fistful of flowers from an angry widow
what'll we do when the meds stop working?
(When all around you life's herky jerky)
Stay busy so the fear doesn't get you
the forest is forever and it's all around you
All stinger and no honey; all brier with no berry
--When you cover your eyes

Smoke
05:26
|
|||
All the houses in this town smoke like trains – smoke like trains
All the people back home burn like leaves in the rain
Tobacco and bourbon and pills for the pain
A voice like an echo of dreams down a drain
They smoke, they smoke
Everyday-- everyday
The churches here have no bells – have no bells
The congregants chant mumbled spells – mumbled spells
and hope that their next life is better than
the puff and the soot they know here so well
They smoke, they smoke
Everyday—everyday….
I rewind, then erase our time in this place
Until I don’t know your name and I don’t know your face
But you’re a dungeon with such dark allure
no matter how many prisoners you never are full
And they smoke, they smoke
Everyday—everyday….

Stone Song
02:40
|
|||
I dug a grave for a friend
It was harder than I thought
It was so easy at the end
With the spade that I bought
I dropped a stone in the gap
Made for grief, such a space
A solid noise was that rap
As the stone found its place
I thought I was swimming to the surface
Woke up at the bottom of the sea
Pulled the stone out starting over
While crying for a three leaf clover
Lowered friend near the end
Ginger and kind salted brine
Settled body to earth bend
One with nature minus time

Holy Ghost War
04:25
|
|||
White doves, arrowhead formation
banking, catching the morning sun
… leaving. this place is poison
It is slowly bleeding everyone
We must walk the bridge before us
Sing the path's roughshod chorus
We must walk the bridge before us
Stumble the beams; weathered, porous
7 doves form a skyscraping ghost
Is it noon? or is it war?
fear’s bitter friend, stops the clocks
A length of chain... it is a horror
We must walk the bridge before us
Sing the path's roughshod chorus
A hedgeapple in the creek
And I’m too tired to sing or speak
I’ve rescued this fire a thousand times
I thought it was a white wood plank
it was a mirror reflecting a cloudy sky
I’ve rescued this fire a thousand times
She kissed me with her coffee tongue
Borrowed sewing kit, threaded needle eye
I’ve rescued this fire a thousand times
There is a silver key sewn now
Beneath the skin of my left thigh
Cut it free, find a knotty pine door
Shimmering key, go inside
I’ve rescued this fire a thousand times

Childhood Lies
02:43
|
|||
When I was a kid
Dogs lived outside
They ate what they wanted
And they never died
When I was a kid
The moon was full ev'ry night
We rode on our bikes
In the silvery light
Our tires never flat
Our chains always tight
We weren't ever home
So our folks didn't fight
When I was a kid
No one ever grew up
We got sick twice a year
But only once threw up
We chewed up our vitamins
Had cartoons once a week
And all of our friends
Lived right down the street
When I was a kid
Dogs lived outside
They ate what they wanted
And they never died
